A Book for Cressbrook
Location: Derbyshire

This project created a book containing historical and contemporary material about the village of cressbrook and its people as well as its natural history. Local people were involved in the collation and organisation of photographic and oral histories and the creation of a detailed sociological record of contemporary rural life.

The book was published in September 2005

The McConnel Eulogy restored

Through investigation work related to the book about cressbrook, we discovered an important historical document. Dated from 1867, the McConnel eulogy was created by the workers at cressbrook Mill to celebrate the retirement of Henry McConnel, owner of the mill and founder of the village. Through working with Jean Rider from the lhi the project team were able to divert funds from the contingency budget into the restoration of the Eulogy.

The now reframed document was unveiled at a packed cressbrook Club on Sunday 15th May. Jean Rider from LHI was in attendance to see this important product from the cressbrook Book project revealed. A Book For cressbrook would like to extend their thanks to Jean and LHI for their involvement and sponsorship of this interesting side issue.

Publication Imminent

on Monday 17th October the book project team were granted the ISBN for the book, which went to BB Printers in Buxton shortly after. The build up to the print up was incredibly intense and much experience was gained in bringing together book material in a single design for the first time so that it could be proof-read. Excitement was rife at this time as we were really looking forward to finally having it in our hands, the date for the launch being Sunday 4th December.

A New Delivery

At 2:55pm on Friday the 25th November Carole Chris and Hillary took delivery of 1200 copies of a brand new book. We were all very emotional. The book looked fantastic and we couldn't wait to get it out to the all of the people in the village who have helped us on our journey. Thanks go to LHI for making all this possible.

The official book launch was held on Sunday the 4th December at cressbrook Club.

Local Community Involvement / Partnerships:
The project was led by a three-person strong project team but drew on the strength of the village. Not just in terms of primary research but also in the creation of both interim and end-products. We concluded a very successful Oral History campaign wherein the older residents of the village, including some who no longer live in the immediate vicinity were interviewed for their life-experiences of the village. Most of these interviews were performed by people from the village outside the management triumvirate. In October 2002 we held a day workshop on doing Oral History interviews which on the evidence and quality of the primary research created was highly successful.
