Ashover Rock Art Project - From 4001 BC to 2001 AD
Location: Derbyshire
This project involved the investigation and interpretation of two discovered pieces of Bronze Age cup and ring rock art.
The project involved activities with school children, local people and people with special needs. These activities included;- investigation of life and landscape, learning through the construction of a roundhouse,
- installation of interpretation panels,
- production of a leaflet,
- conservation of the rocks
The project raised the awareness of both local people and visitors to the area and provided opportunities for volunteers to learn skills from working with experts
The project generated a wide range of benefits. A huge level of local pride in the historic past of Ashover, its local distinctiveness and community was recognised. The focus of the roundhouse brought together a diverse range of the community, young and old, rich and poor, all working together on an exciting project. Many new skills were learnt including practical skills in building the Roundhouse. A high level of skill exchange took place too, especially given the "no power tools" rule! This resulted in the development of traditional skills and crafts.
