Belper/Milford industrial legacies
Location: Derbyshire
This project was part of a wider strategy linked with the Derwent Valley Trust and followed on from applications made by other community groups along the Derwent Valley. The aim of the project was to promote the preservation, conservation and enhancement of the valley through interpretation of the local heritage, thereby increasing knowledge and enjoyment of the area for both locals and visitors alike.
The local community were involved from the early stages right through to completion. Initial stages encouraged involvement of a wide audience, and two working groups were set up, one in Belper and one in Milford. A launch event was held outlining the project and its aims. The project involved research and the gathering of information for three interpretation panels and the production of three accompanying leaflets.
Reference to other panels were made and it is expected that this will stimulate interest in more distant heritage sites whilst informing people of the World Heritage status. Any material gathered was archived with Belper Historical Society and the Heritage Centre, allowing free public access, and links were made with the Belper Town Council website.
