Bonsall History Project
Location: Derbyshire

T' owd Man o' Bonsall - a stone relief, now in Wirksworth Church, testifies to the importance of Lead Mining in Bonsall in Mediaeval and early modern times and Bonsall Moor is the product of many of the industries' workings. An Anglo-Saxon gold necklet was discovered close to the village and Bonsall is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It has also been involved in the textiles industry (pre and post Arkwright) and was an important salter's route and a staging post on the road between Derby and Manchester.

The group produced a comprehensive history of Bonsall covering archaeology, changes in landscape and land ownership through the ages, Civil War, Censuses of 1841-1901, industry, schooling and education in the 19C and 20C, architecture, and reminiscences from local people.
