Henry Dry Bread Book
Location: Derbyshire
Governor's Permission
Henry "Drybread" Sherriff's impressive Romani ancestry can be traced back with certainty to one King Haniel Boswell (born 1583). After the tragic death of his mother Henry was brought up by his grandparents, from whom he learned some very fine old Romani.
He learned to read and write in prison and began a series of letters to his friend, the lawyer Richard Wade. Henry's legacy is an amazing heritage of writings, some of which need the proverbial pinch of salt, which Richard Wade fortunately preserved!
This project enabled members of the gypsy community to learn from and appreciate their cultural heritage. The project involved the printing of a book in both English and Romani including folk songs, tales, reminiscences and traditions.
