Other Stones - Other Meanings
Location: Derbyshire

Other Stones - Other Meanings was an exploration of the ancient stones of Middleton and Smerrill, a collaboration between the local community and the children of its primary school.

Supported by Peak District National Park Authority archaeologist Alice Ullathorne, members of the parish suggested archaeological sites that the local school children should research. The children visited these sites with Alice and writer David Fine. Returning to school, the children continued to work with David to produce poems which were later exhibited to an enthusiastic public.

Eight of the poems were used as an interpretive guide on the archaeology of the parish, while Sites of Meaning is using other poems as text on the boundary stones it is marking parish entrances with.

A photographic record was made throughout, with photographer Chris Webb accompanying the children on their visits and later making a contemporary record of the stones the children encountered.

This site documents the progress of Other Stones – Other Meanings; the role the community and school played, the sites and stones they visited, and the verse that will adorn some of the marker stones around the parish of Middleton and Smerrill.
