New Mills - The Town on the Torrs
Location: Derbyshire

On the theme of "fire and water", the group have translated material on the history of New Mills onto an interactive DVD inspired by the history of The Torrs.

The Torrs is the gorge which runs through the town and has been home to numerous mills since the time of the Industrial Revolution and has since been opened up to the public.

The DVD includes material shot at the lantern procession and of the community workshops leading up to it, it also features;
  • exploration of extensive archive material
  • recording from the oral history initiative (currently being undertaken outside of this project)
  • maps
  • dramatized readings and performance
For the performance element, a team of local theatrical story tellers worked for the second week of the New Mills Summer festival (held in September 2003), holding workshops in local schools during the day and in the community after school hours.

They created large scale puppets/figures and theatrical presentations to celebrate the history and heritage of New Mills, culminating in a performance on the final Saturday of the Festival.
