The overall project contains two elements. The first element is the physical works needed to realize the Garden of Remembrance project such as a new memorial and construction of the new garden area. Which will offer a suitable location in terms of access, quiet contemplation and remembrance. In general terms the project will clear and level the area that has become overgrown and provide formalized footways and seating leading to and around a central garden feature. The majority of the headstones will be relocated around the remainder of the site and to the adjacent churchyard. There are a small number of war graves situated adjacent the proposed central area which shall remain in place as part of the remembrance theme of the project.
The second element is the heritage aspect which includes the research, publication and launch of a book documenting the general history of Woodville, this will include a section documenting the family histories attached to the war memorial; research, design, fabrication, installation and launch of several local heritage interpretation boards; workshops leading to the construction and installation of a heritage mosaic designed by local school children; research into and construction of a Rope Walk and design and construction of web pages exploring these activities and the local heritage. The heritage elements of the project have been separated out to make a (successful) funding application to the Local Heritage Initiative Fund
The philosophy underpinning the project is to involve the community in discovering, acknowledging and celebrating their heritage and to this end a11 the activities will be undertaken with community participation in mind through events such as workshops, memory/recollection sessions, public meetings etc.
The Woodville area is rich in heritage with a wide variety of industries such as potteries, crate making, pipe works, breweries, rope-making and railways all having had a presence in the area which is now either totally gone or extremely diminished.
