Bowden Before the Conquest
Location: Leicestershire
It is recorded that Great Bowden, mentioned in the Domesday Book, was right at the edge of Saxon England being on the River Welland, the dividing river between Christian and non-Christian kingdoms at that time. There is ample evidence to suggest that Great Bowden was the commercial centre of a small kingdom.
The groups activities involved research into plants used in Saxon times, field walking and collection of finds from peoples' gardens under the guidance of the County Archaeologist. A Saxon style banner was created and a range of workshops held in Saxon pottery, mead making, cloth dyeing, archery and Anglo-Saxon language lessons.
The Historical Society, Festival Committee, Garden Club, Women's Institute and local school all participated and the group held an exhibition to celebrate Great Bowden’s Saxon heritage with the culmination of all the information and finds from the project.
They also developed the village website, printed leaflets on the findings of the Saxon Wild Flower and Plant survey and engaged the school in developing Wild Flower Posters: They produced videos and photographs of all the events.
