Award for LHI group
Location: Leicestershire
The Local Heritage Initiative project 'Growing up in World War II' by Loughborough War Memorial Museum has won first prize in the 'Special projects' section of the Leicestershire & Rutland Heritage Awards 2005.
Funded by an £11,979 LHI grant, the Growing up in World War II project group held an exhibition at Charnwood Museum as part of the VE day 60th anniversary celebrations. The exhibition was created entirely by local community volunteers and coordinated by the Loughborough War Memorial Museum (LWMM).
The exhibition explored the experiences of young people and children during World War II and contrasted life from the war era to the present day. Exhibits were supplied by LWMM and local people. Reminiscences and memories were captured through oral history recordings, and included non-British people who were living in Loughborough during wartime, which gave a different perspective through different experiences.
The exhibition ran over the summer months and created resources including handling boxes of relevant artefacts with clothing from the period and learning packs for use by schools and community groups.
At the awards ceremony, the panel of judges were pleased to note the involvement of Local Heritage Initiative funding.
