Wigston Framework Knitters Heritage Project
Location: Leicestershire

Wigston Framework Knitters Museum is a preserved 19th century framework knitter's cottage with associated workshop and Victorian garden. A heritage interpretation centre funded by HLF will be completed by Autumn 2005.

This LHI project will create resources to be used by local community groups, schools and visitors to increase understanding and appreciation of the framework knitting industry in Wigston.

A freelance professional museum education worker will train volunteers in how to create resources for different audiences and in running associated activity workshops. Resources created will include a handling box of material from the collection containing authentic "dressing up" material and information sheets for users.

Packs for teachers and other groups will show how the collection and site can be used for school visits and local groups. A trail leaflet will be created linking heritage organisations in the area and this will also feature on the museum's website.

A mobile display touring community groups and venues will encourage more people to get involved in researching and caring for this important part of their social and industrial heritage.
