A DVD with filmed and still images of the village
Location: Lincolnshire

The DVD

The LHI funding allowed us to purchase a digital camcorder and a stills camera, which we used to good effect by carrying out a filmed and photographic survey of our village. We sought professional advice on how to approach this part of the project, as it was completely new to us. We received ‘hands on’ help to familiarise us with the equipment and techniques required which subsequently enabled us to carry out the filming and ‘voice overs’ following a carefully thought out commentary for each filming location in the village.

We succeeded in producing a DVD of; we are told, creditable standard with some very good colour photos and, as mentioned previously; many very old black and white ones.

We all agree that a comprehensive on film capture of the whole area of the village with voice over commentary is now required for the benefit of future generations and with the training we have received and the subsequent experience we have enjoyed feel confident enough to undertake this task: the only professional help required being the authoring and burning to disc of the finished product, and any printing required.

To be able to use these new skills and gain further experience can only be beneficial for any future, similar projects the Group may wish to undertake.

This DVD complements the book and visa versa in as much as what is seen and spoken of on film is dealt with in more detail in the book.

A rest during filming in the village © The Leverton History Group The filming was carried out over a period of three or four days in some of the hottest sunshine we have experienced for years. It was very tiring indeed - plodding around the village setting up - filming and moving on to the next location. It was good too, in the fact it got us into areas of the village we hadn't visited for a long, long time. We are now resolved to visit the marshes and the more remote spots on a more regular basis.

We also hadn't been up there for ages either and found it was most enjoyable. We advise any group considering making application for a LHI grant to research their project and explore associated costs such as: equipment: printing: filming and any other work carried out on their behalf. For instance: professional help may be required to advise and instruct on ways to search archived material correctly.

Bear in mind also that the project may ‘take off’ beyond expectations necessitating a larger printed volume, in which case: would a second volume be more practical?
