Pickworth with Walcot Board School
Location: Lincolnshire

In response to the first Education Act of 1870, a board of five influential persons including William Manners and Reverend Houghton was set up. Their tasks included the purchase of an appropriate site, the overseeing of the construction of both the school and headteacher's house and the effective running of the school after its opening.

Throughout the history of the school, the headteachers made entries into its Log Books on a very regularly basis. From these entries a clear picture of life within school walls can be obtained and insights into the daily lives of the pupils and their families give life to the pages. The school was regularly inspected and advised on how to improve the education it offered: on occasions it is apparent that the inspector's recommendations are poorly received: with fifty scholars aged from four to thirteen years to teach in one room by one teacher, the task must have at times seemed truly daunting.

Although various personal anecdotes have been collected about school life at Pickworth since 1925 and several photographs since 1950 have been obtained, any information regarding classroom or playground life including photographs, reports and artefacts that we may borrow would be of interest to us. All items will be returned to their owners. Can you help our research in any way?
