The 2nd Book and DVD of Leverton Launch on Friday 28th April 2006 Followed by the ‘Leverton Songs of Praise on Sunday the 30th April
What can we say about this the second Book and DVD launch, but; well done everyone! The interest shown was well beyond even our expectations. After one very successful project and subsequent launch we had certain trepidations coming to the end of our second. We needn’t have worried, our Parishioners and friends once again backed us 100% for our final book launch, turning up in their hundreds to purchase their copies of the book and disc, and also to meet old school friends at the school reunion running with the launch event. It was so good to see all those people, many of them old school chums and friends, enjoying themselves together, turning the pages of the books and discussing their finds, some, with friends they had known for maybe 70 or even 80 years from their early school days together. The event was being filmed, too, and the camera man was kept busy with the many and various shots taken during the evening. The footage of the launch is being edited in with that taken during the ‘Leverton Songs of Praise’ held at St. Helena’s Church on the following Sunday, the 30th April, and placed on a separate DVD to be produced about two weeks after the service. Our beautiful Church of St. Helena was filled to capacity with everyone singing ‘their hearts’ out’ to traditional Christian hymns chosen by members of the congregation, all ex-pupils of the old Leverton school, in fact, one lady attended the school as a child only some 40 years after it was opened in 1873 ‘to accommodate some 100 pupils’. It was closed in 1986 after more than 100 years of good honest service to our community.
It was so heart-warming to see our communities coming together to, once again, be in the company of old friends and share reminiscences of days long past. Also to attend in very large numbers on the following Sunday, our ‘Leverton Songs of Praise’, service, organised by the Reverend Graham Wright, in thanksgiving for the events, not just over the weekend, but also in appreciation for our communities, our friendships and for our being a part for it all, for some, maybe only a few short years, but, for one or two of our congregation, 90 years or more.
We, as the Leverton History Group feel honoured and privileged to have been able to serve our communities in bringing to them a little of their heritage, history and culture in both written and digital format. We know by comments and attendances at the various functions that all the hard work has been appreciated. After a period of getting our ‘breaths back’, as it were, we will once again looking around for other projects that, when completed, will enhance our ancient village and the lives of all who live there.
We give our grateful thanks to the Local Heritage Initiative, the Local Heritage Fund supported by the Nationwide Building Society and all ably administered by the Countryside Agency. Without the financial help given to our projects, and the help and guidance given by the Countryside Agency who were always there to offer advice and encouragement, our projects would not even have begun. Many thanks to you all.
