Echoes community play
Location: Northamptonshire

Our community play, “Echoes,” funded by our Local Heritage Initiative grant, played to packed houses on both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June during celebrations marking the Bicetenary of Blisworth tunnel on the Grand Union Canal.

Our play-write and producer, Richard Conlon, created a drama which celebrated the rich and varied history of our village. Dating back at least to Roman times and mentioned in the Doomesday Book, the village was a thriving transport hub for goods and people moving between the industrial Midlands and London in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The plot reflected the story line used by Charles Dickens in “A Christmas Carol,” as a navvy from the canal-building era conducted our local historian, George Freestone (who died a few years ago) on a series of visits to places and people recorded in his vast archive of papers and pictures. Characters and stories familiar to people in the village featured and many people said they found the story very moving.

The cast of local adults and children performed their roles with great style and the costumes, props, lighting and music all added to the success of the production.

All this plus the enthusiasm expressed by audience and performers may possibly lead to the revival of our village drama society.
