Finedon Yards

The photo shows 'Widows' Row' - a row of six cottages occupied by almswomen. The cottages were demolished in 1962. Other than three window frames which are part of the old churchyard wall, nothing remains of these cottages today. © Anon
The group has prepared a map of the location of the yards in Finedon in 1900. © Anon

Finedon Yards
Location: Northamptonshire

What is a Yard ?

A plot of land with small ironstone and brick-built terraced houses on 2,3,or 4 sides OR a narrow alleyway connecting 2 streets with similar houses, at right-angles to the streets. Few official records on the social, industrial and architectural history of Finedon Parish are available. This project will publish a book on Finedon Yards together with records in hardcopy and electronic form which will be available to the general public.

As part of the project the group will develop a digital photographic archive that will store all the information collected through this project and assist with future projects that the group wish to carry out.

Many of 'The Yards' were demolished between 1930 and 1950 hence it is important that we record all the information we can at this time or it will be lost forever. Many of the people who have personal memories are now over 70 but we are very pleased with the number of contacts we have been able to make.

At the moment these are mainly in Northamptonshire but we have extended our net as far as Devon and hope to make contact with residents who have moved overseas.
