Paulerspury Past Evening - 14th November 2003
Location: Northamptonshire

Over 100 people attended this evening which I think is a tribute to the many who keep the past of the village alive via their memories, books, photographs and records. How many more would have made it but for the dreadful weather and the bug which is currently laying people low?

The tables were overflowing such was the amount of material we had. The farm implements from Manor Farm, Pury End, brought back many memories and were of great interest to the youngsters present. The display of lace, pillows, patterns and bobbins by the ladies in Paulerspury still making lace was very much admired. Many present recognised their relations in the photographs which were displayed.

"William Carey" and "A Social History of Lace" were the subjects of two talks. Our two speakers were excellent and both left us thinking "How did they cope?" The photographic "walk through the village" presented by John Litchfield was very much appreciated and demonstrated how little has changed in most areas. The poems were a poignant reminder of the social differences felt at that time. They were written by pupils from our Primary School and prizes awarded.

An item was brought to the evening which needs further investigation by experts. It could prove to be very exciting.

I have been asked if the exhibition could be done again but for a whole day this time. I am happy to do this as it would enable the younger members to attend which is very important. I have therefore booked the village hall for Saturday, 31st January, 2004. The hall will be open from 10.30 a.m.-4.30 p.m.

The painting of Paulerspury and Pury End which you see on the page is available for purchase at £10 per print. They are exquisite scenes by Mr Len Goff, a very well known and collected artist from Pury End. He attended the school in Paulerspury some 60 years ago followed by his children and grandchildren. He took 150 hours to paint the picture for us. Each copy will be signed. The proceeds are being given to the school. Contact for prints - 01327 811281.

Our Playwright, Paul Drewitt, attended and was able to get the real flavour of the village by mingling amongst us. Many of the characters on view will be portrayed.
