Raunds Bootmakers March Centenarr
Location: Northamptonshire

For hundreds of years, Northamptonshire was renowned for the making of boots and shoes. Raunds had 14 factories making footwear - now it has none. The shoe factories have become housing estates with only the street names giving a clue to the rich industrial past.

This project is to focus on the centenary of a march to London from Raunds (a round trip of 170 miles) by 115 striking boot-makers. The event made national headlines, years before the Jarrow march. The project will culminate in the symbolic re-enactment of the march and will be commemorated by the unveiling of a plaque. An exhibition will highlight the events leading up to the march and the changing face of the shoe industry in the county.
