Phase Two

Sulgrave Castle Project
Location: Northamptonshire

Stage 1 of the Local Heritage Initiative-funded Archaeology Project has now been successfully completed, and the Archaeology Group has been reviewing the results.

The project involved a large amount of extremely interesting work processing and making a digital archive of finds and documents from extensive excavations that were carried out on the Castle site between 1960 and 1976 by Mr Brian Davison.

The main aims of Stage 1:

1. Carry out an assessment of the finds and documents to enable experts to know how much work would be required to complete a full analysis of the material. This would then provide information for an academic report, and enable the story of the site to be explained to the public, including residents, tourists and school children.

2. Raise awareness and increase appreciation of the Scheduled Ancient Monument, and learn more about the techniques and process involved in post-excavation work.

3. Produce a catalogue and archive of the records, and start to prepare the finds for permanent archive.

All the above aims have been achieved.
