Sulgrave Characters and Heritage LHI Project
Location: Northamptonshire
The LHI awarded Sulgrave History Society a grant of £10,574 in April 2002. The project included a programme of events for the National Local History Week in May 2002 with re-enactments, guided History Tours of the village, and a photographic exhibition, followed by the production of a History Tour leaflet.
The major part of the funding was for Stage 1 of a longer-term Oral History project, recording the memories of local residents. A photographic record of present-day Sulgrave was also created.
All these projects have been hugely successful. Not only have they involved a great number of villagers in digging out material, artefacts and long-forgotten skills, but new skills and friendships have been developed alongside a deeper understanding of how Sulgrave has evolved through the years.
An amazing 1,300 volunteer hours were put in, valued by the LHI at over £9,300
Ultimately it is hoped that Stage 2 of the project will present this material to the wider public in a series of chapters of a book, a DVD and via the village website.
The oral History material will be placed in the archives at Sulgrave Manor local history museum, and at the Northampton Record Office.
