Working Horses on the land
Location: Nottinghamshire
The Acres in Time project evolved from the work and findings of the Rushcliffe Barn Owl Project. It is nearly ten years since the Barn Owl project began. During its time there has been a vast change in the way people used to live, work and manage our landscape.
Many people worked on the land and the days were long. This picture shows what would have been a familiar sight within our landscape up to around the late 1960s. Wilfred (Wilf) Andrews is pictured with two shires ready for work at Long Farm, Ruddington. The picture dates from around the early 1940s at the time of the Second World War. Unfortunately Wilf is no longer with us. Today machinery does the work of many horses and men.
Wilf’s Mother and sister Lilian are seen here along with Lilian’s Mother in Law (Mary Nutt). The picture was taken at Moor Farm, Ruddington. Lilian is the one feeding the chickens. Lilian’s Father(John William Andrews) was employed as head waggoner and so worked a great deal of his time with heavy horses. He was in charge of as many as a dozen gentle giants at any one time. He is pictured here with his wife Rosetta mother to Lilian and Wilf. They also had three other children Annie, Connie and Florence. There was one other child Frederic but he sadly died at the age of eighteen months.
