Holme Pit SSSI De-silting Project Phase 2
Location: Nottinghamshire

The site originated as a marl pit prior to 1763 and has a long history of local involvement. The Holme Pit Action Group has managed the site under a lease agreement for 4 years. The fishery resource had become degraded due to lack of funding but it provided a focus for a group of local people in partnership with Nottingham City Council. Their efforts were rewarded by an SSSI award from English Nature in 2003. The pond has now silted up to the extent that there is very little fish habitat left and if the process is not halted, the pond will fill up and open water habitat and associated aquatic fauna fill be lost, as well the fishing resource.

Phase 1 (not funded by LHI) included a feasibility study, detailed topographical survey of the pond and a survey of aquatic fauna. In phase 2 specialist contractors will remove silt from the main water body of the pond and this will be incorporated into agricultural land as a soil improver. Conservation days, study days and educational days will be held on site with Nottingham City Council & BTCV with training in thinning trees, repairing fences, monitoring wildlife and construction of fishing platforms
