Loughton's Legacy
Location: Nottinghamshire
This project focuses on the life and achievements of Alfred J Loughton, a little known local man who lived in Southwell through the end of the Victorian era and 2 world wars. In addition to his hardware shop and other interests he was a one-man production unit making violins and bicycles and taking and processing photographs. He sold copies of his photographs locally and entered national and international competitions and these photographs are a lasting record of life, buildings and architecture locally and elsewhere before 1953.
The project will make Loughton's photographs available to the community for the first time and will enable local schoolchildren to make use of a local personality in studying their heritage and history as well as providing an insight into what could be achieved without the modern technological aids available to us today. This will be done by completing the accessioning and cataloguing of a large collection of photographs donated to Southwell Minster following Loughton's death, setting up and compiling a database of these photographs and making this available to the public for study and enjoyment.
The group will also research and record the heritage of Loughton and will hold an exhibition of his life and work, compile a leaflet to make the information available to the local community and prepare a teacher's pack.
