Pancake Hill Project
Location: Nottinghamshire

It is believed that Pancake Hill is the site of a small 11th/12th Century Motte & Bailey Castle but there is no direct reference to the site in Mediaeval documentary sources.

The use of the site as a castle probably did not last long and it has never been fully investigated. It was also possibly used as a Prospect mound in the 18th Century and has been used in living memory as a venue for Shrove Tuesday games by local children, which may point to older traditions.

The project aims to clear undergrowth from this Scheduled Ancient Monument and fell some mature trees to ensure the root systems do not further damage the archaeological remains.

Geophysical & Topographical survey will be carried out and local volunteers of all ages will be involved in field-walking, washing of finds, survey work, photography, research and oral history recording.
