Sikhism & Khasla Wood: More Than Words
Location: Nottinghamshire

Khalsa Wood was created by 600 members of the Sikh community to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Vaishakhi in 1999. The Wood is within Bestwood Country Park and is located on the northern urban fringe of Nottingham.

The project is engaging the local community, and in particular, members of the local Sikh community. The project is investigating, interpretive and celebrating the natural landscape of the park itself. The members of the group are taking an active role in restoring the park.

Khalsa Wood provides the context within which the heritage of Sikhism is being examined. The sense of place is providing a catalyst for investigating and explaining the history of Sikhism and its relationship with the environment.

The project is providing a range of activities which are involving local people of all ages. These activities include investigation and research, live performances, trails and interpretive materials, exhibitions, and multi-lingual information leaflets.
