Ampthill Park has probably been parkland since the 15th century when Ampthill castle was built. It was landscaped by Capability Brown in the 18th century, and it still retains many features from that time. The castle is a Scheduled Monument, and the whole park is on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. It is also one of the largest expanses of rare acid grassland left in Bedfordshire.
The project is conducting a desk study of records (including the original Capability Brown designs), a field survey of earthworks and veteran trees, an ecological survey including parkland, ponds, and wetlands, and the project is conducting a visitors survey.
Recommendations from these specialist surveys are being put forward for public consultation via a leaflet, an exhibition, guided walks and public meetings. The idea is to give local people a say in how the site should be managed in the future, and to eventually produce a final integrated management plan designed to safeguard the Park's historic, landscape and wildlife heritage.
