The project is identifying recorded place names, and their origin within the Parish of Ampthill. This includes field names, boundary features, named features such as wells and trees, and street names.
Local names used by past and present residents are being collected through a questionnaire, which is distributed with the local free newspaper. An interim map, showing the preliminary findings of the research, will be published after the first year, to stimulate debate and discussion.
The final results will be made available through displays, a printed map, and a book showing named places and explaining their origins and history. Archive photographs will be included in the book.
Future plans include the development of educational materials relating to Ampthill place names and local buildings, for local schools and visiting groups.
