The Wildflower Seed Collections of Bedfordshire
Location: Bedfordshire
The project aims to collect wildflower seeds from ancient woodlands throughout Bedfordshire and raise awareness of the importance of this aspect of local natural heritage. The Heritage Seed Collection was set up 3 years ago and was funded by HLF and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
The aim of that project was to collect tree seeds from ancient woodlands and sow them at the Community Tree nursery using volunteers. This project will do the same for wildflower seeds. When grown on and planted in newly-restored woodlands, they will help complete the gaps in woodland restoration and form a more complete ecosystem.
The project intends to involve a wide range of community groups and schools, who will have the opportunity to visit ancient woodlands and learn about their native flora. Volunteers will be trained and will be involved in many aspects of the project such as wildflower seed collections, seed sowing and planting, etc.
The group is being advised by the Wildlife Working Groups and Biodiversity Action Plan partnership. The local community will be kept up to date via newsletters, talks, web site, etc.
