The Community Tree Trust was granted funding from the Countryside Agency to carry out wildflower seed collections from a number of ancient woodlands throughout Bedfordshire in spring 2005.Woodland wildflower surveys of Flitwick Wood, Bowles Wood, Bramingham Wood and Kempston Wood took place in April, and from these distribution maps were produced showing the main areas of species.
Wildflower walks and wildflower seed collection events took place around Bramingham Wood, Bowles Wood and Flitwick Wood in May, June and July and a total number of 110 School children took part. A total number of 35 cubs, beavers and brownies also participated in wildflower walks and seed collection events in Flitwick Wood, Bowles Wood and Bramingham Wood.
The wildflower species collected included Wood anemone, Lesser celandine, Greater stitchwort and Dog’s mercury in May, and Primrose, Wood avens, Bluebell, Ramsons, Enchanter,s nightshade and Hedge woundwort and in June and July. Wild arum, Wood avens, Enchanter,s nightshade and Hedge woundwort was also collected in August.
Wildflower seed sowing events took place at the Community Tree Nursery at Clophill and The John Niles Memorial Woodland in October, and at Colemoreham Spinney and Flitwick Wood in November. All of the seed collected throughout the year was sown during these events.
