Super students survey archaeological site
Location: Cambridgeshire

February 2003

Talented students from St Bede’s Comprehensive School at Cherry Hinton in Cambridgeshire have been taking part in archaeological and natural history survey work recently as part of the LHI programme.

The Cherry Hinton project involved members of 2XL, a support group for St Bede’s most talented students and their parents, working with archaeologists from Cambridgeshire County Council's Archaeology Field Unit. Together, they conducted an archaeological and natural history survey of the site, which is situated on the outskirts of Cambridge and known locally as the ‘Giant's Grave’ or ‘The Spring’.

The objective is for the students to produce a report, give talks, create posters and set up further displays to explain the site to the local community. A future phase of the project will involve the students conducting tours of the site to benefit pupils from local primary schools.

Ann Sanderson, Project Organiser, commented: "It is really interesting and exciting for the students to go out of school and do some real survey work with professional archaeologists. This project is something extra which is adding to and extending their normal schoolwork."
