2XL Cherry Hinton Hall Project
Location: Cambridgeshire

Cherry Hinton Hall and grounds are owned by Cambridge City Council and managed as a public park. The project aimed to carry out an archaeological and buildings survey of the Hall and park. They wished to locate a water mill, mentioned in the Domesday book and believed to lie in the parkland.

The work was planned to be carried out by student members of 2XL, which is a support group for able students and their parents at a local comprehensive school. The work would be supervised by staff and specialists who would also provide appropriate training.

The project aimed to allow local primary schools to visit the site, guided by the older children. They would product information leaflets and interpretation boards to increase local awareness of the history of the site, which had been poorly understood.

Sharing the group's findings was an important aim. They planned to make a display at the local library, presentations to local communities, and put information on the school web site. They also planned to lodge a project report at local libraries and a professionally produced archaeological report with cambridgeshire SMR. An NBS award was requested to pay for appropriate supervision to allow students with special needs to participate fully in the project.
