A Celebration of the 1944 University Boat Race
Location: Cambridgeshire
Diamond 44 propose to raise awareness of the customs, traditions and natural heritage of Ely and the Fenlands. The project will raise awareness and celebrate Ely's involvement in hosting the University Boat Race in 1944. Life in the community at this time will be researched and recorded. A project launch event will be held with a re-contest of the 1944 boat race by university veteran crews on the River Ouse. An exhibition of memorabilia with information about Dean Merrivale of Ely Cathedral, an early university oarsman who played a significant role in the race's development will be on display.
Dancing lessons from the 1940's with encouragement to reminisce about life for the local communities at this time and a service of thanksgiving will be held at Ely Cathedral. Local community transport from surrounding villages will be provided for the launch event. Presentations will be given to schools and community organisations.
A riverside heritage walk will be developed, leaflets produced and a permanent display of community life in the 1940's with information about the historic waterways of the Fenland and their importance to the local economy and leisure will be developed.
