Bourn Iron Project
Location: Cambridgeshire

The project will investigate and research the medieval iron-making industry of Bourn. It will include archaeological evaluation and subsequent excavation of sites located by fieldwalking, geophysics, etc. and research into Bourn Manorial documents held at Christ’s College, Cambridge, which are unusually informative. These documents will be professionally restored, then researched and catalogued by volunteers.

Training will be provided for volunteers to learn relevant fieldwork skills, and there will be professional supervision. Meetings and events will be held inviting local people to participate in the project. Talks, walks and open days will give opportunities for all local people, school children, etc. to share in the results and all finds and records will be stored in appropriate public repositories.

The project will produce both an academic report and a popular booklet. Progress of the project will be displayed at local information points (shop, pubs, school, village hall, etc.). An exhibition will be held at the Village Hall on completion of the project. The County Archaeologist supports this project
