Burwell Castle Education & Promotion Project
Location: Cambridgeshire
Burwell Castle is an earthwork, which is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The 12th Century castle earthworks became a focal point for the village during the summer of 2002, thanks to this project. It consisted of: - 2 directional signs leading to the site
- 7 on-site interpretation boards
- A further board at the local museum, explaining this and other local historical sites
- A leaflet (delivered to each household) and an education pack, explaining the natural history and archaeology
- A chance to meet the Saxon equivalent of the TA’s at their training, in the guise of the local branch of living history group Regia Anglorum
- A guided walk led by an expert from the county Archaeological Field Unit
- A family picnic by the spring, the very spot where local ‘Robber Baron’ Geoffrey de Mandeville was mortally wounded, followed by a chance to find out more … whether he deserved his notoriety and the part he played in our village’s turbulent past: a guided walk led by a local amateur historian
All in all, the project proved a valuable, and very enjoyable, opportunity to find out more about this important village amenity, landmark and part of our local heritage. The project was co-funded by the Local Heritage Initiative grant and DEFRA’s Countryside Stewardship Scheme.
