Archaeology RheeSearch - Community Archaelogical Projects
Location: Cambridgeshire

The current group evolved from a previous LHI project, which culminated in the publication in 2004 of Thriplow Time Trails – A Rough Archaeologist’s Guide to an Ancient Village.

Since then, we have recruited four additional members and now undertake magnetometry and resistivity surveys in south Cambridgeshire. This is usually at the request of local archaeologists or historians in order to help them to understand their site and in some cases to suggest places to undertake excavations.

In addition to surveys in villages like Foxton and Little Shelford, we have completed work at Cambridge Castle and Sawston Hall and have a number of ongoing projects in Thriplow, Whittlesford, Wimpole and Milton. We are pleased to report that our services are much in demand and several possible new assignments are currently under discussion.

The results of our surveys are provided to those who requested them. Where our survey forms a complete piece of work in its own right we provide a more formal report for the Cambridgeshire Sites and Monuments Record and make it available on our web site.

We encourage interest in landscape archaeology and local history by giving talks to local societies and providing hands-on demonstrations at local events such as the Bassingbourn Big Dig, 2005 and the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend, where members of the public are able to try their hand at geophysics, ‘just like on Time Team.’ This year you will be able to meet us at events in both Wimpole and Cambridge as we are taking part in National Archaeology Week, 2006.

A prospectus explaining the purpose of our group is available on request to local parishes and other organisations and a detailed description of our work and the equipment we use can be found on our website.
