Eatons People and Places: the story so far
Location: Cambridgeshire

This project aims to research all the older buildings and their families within the project area. Since the older village areas of Eaton Socon and Eaton Ford were moved out of Bedfordshire in 1965 and later went into Cambridgeshire in 1972 vast changes have undertaken this once rural area. The opening of the A1 bypass around the older village areas in 1972 sealed the fate of the rural character of the area. Popualtion in this area has risen from under two thousand to around twelve thousand in thirty years. The Community Association began to record the history of the Eatons and try to keep the identity of the Eatons area within the growing town of St Neots.

This is a two stage project. In stage 1, the project used a professional researcher, local residents (in 'nostalgia evenings'), and local schools, to create a historical record of the area, its buildings, and local families, over the last 200 years up to 1963.

Leaflets were produced and circulated to all residents, talks are being given to interested groups, and exhibitions are being produced which show the work in progress. Schools are actively participating in the research, by adopting specific study areas.

Stage 2 achieved funding for completion of the research, formal publication of it (possibly in CD ROM format), a final exhibition, creation of historical trails, plaques for significant buildings, and history booklets and leaflets.
