Eatons People and Places Project

This exciting project aims to provide an extensive source of historical information about life in Eaton Socon and Eaton Ford.

By using documents such as census material, house deeds, maps, directories and photographs we have
  • Charted the development of the villages of Eaton Socon and Eaton Ford up to present day
  • Charted the development of the hamlets that now make up Eaton Ford ie. Cross Hall, Cross Hall Ford, Eaton Ford and Maltmans Gardens
  • Placed families in their homes from 1799 to the 1960’s
  • Linked up families and plotted where they have moved
How far is the project?
  • Archives such as Censuses, the 1799 Enclosure Award, 19th century directories and some 20th century directories have been transcribed
  • The Eaton Socon churchyard and cemetery have been surveyed and recorded
  • Studies have been made of around 2000 houses
  • Typed copies of church burial registers since 1813 are available
  • Typed copies of church marriage registers since 1813 are being checked
  • Booklets have been written on the hamlets of Little End, Cross Hall Ford, Maltmans Gardens, Cross Hall and Eaton Ford with a brief description of each property and their associated families
  • The next booklet is being compiled on the three roads in the old village of Eaton Socon - Ackerman Street, School Lane and Peppercorns Lane.
How can the resources be accessed
  • Archives have been placed in local schools, libraries, county archives, historical societies and on the internet.
  • Historical boards are being placed at selected places in the Eatons in the summer of 2006
  • Historical plaques will be put on important buildings
  • Booklets are being written on the hamlets with a brief description of each property and their associated families
  • Exhibitions will be held annually and archives will be available for use
