Foxton Dovecot and Meadow Enhancement Project
Location: Cambridgeshire
The aim of this project is the restoration of an early 18th century building, believed to have been a dovecot or grain store. Its distinctive thatched roof, shown in old photos of the village, will be restored and the structure made sound. The building stands in a meadow which also contains earthworks of archaeological interest.
The Friends of Foxton Dovecot and Meadow group will manage the site according to a management plan agreed with the owner: the County Council. The aim is to secure a 25 yr lease on the site for restoring the dovecot, and a further 25 yr lease for revitalising the meadow (this has now happened - see the 2006 update page).
Proposed works include adopting specific mowing regimes, selective weed control and hedgerow management. Members of the group will undertake training in grassland management to increase their skills.
Local people’s awareness of the dovecot and meadow as heritage assets will be raised through public events and conservation days, and the group will create an interpretation board, leaflets and an education pack about the site. The latter will be used by the adjacent village school during their visits.
