Haslingfield Bakehouse Project
Location: Cambridgeshire
The group are relocating two (unlisted) historic buildings, a bakehouse and a privy. Dating from the early nineteenth century, they were originally outbuildings of Quarry Farm, which was itself demolished in the 1960s. They will be moved from their present site, which is due to be redeveloped, to a new site on a public open space in the village.
The bakehouse, although not listed, is constructed in an unusual material (clay bat) and is an important local example of its type. Contractors will demolish and rebuild both buildings to a specification approved by the District Council Conservation officer, who is working closely with the group and strongly supports the project.
Once relocated, the buildings will be used as a heritage resource centre for the community.
Volunteers will carefully record the structure of the buildings during dismantling to enable accurate re-assembly. They will keep a photographic record of the project, redecorate the buildings once the relocation is complete and landscape the area around them.
A free workshop on clay bat construction will be held on the site at 10 a.m. on September 17th 2005 which will be open to all.
Once relocated the buildings will be equipped with permanent display boards, covering the history associated with the buildings and village life contemporary to them, all researched by local volunteers.
The buildings will be used as a resource centre by the local school and will also be opened to the public on a regular basis, staffed with volunteers. Volunteers will give demonstration firings of the oven and bake in it on Village Festival days.
Responsibility for long term maintenance of the relocated buildings has been taken on by the Parish Council.
