Huntingdon 800
Location: Cambridgeshire
The project aim was to create a website containing a series of digital multimedia maps of historic Huntingdon to celebrate the town’s octocentenary in 2005.
The maps feature links to real historic maps from the County Council’s archive and have hot spots with related links including 360 degree video clips. Hot spots were researched and developed by pupils in nine local schools and by a group of adult volunteers, with support from the group and the County Council.
In two of the project schools selected small areas in the grounds were excavated by pupils under strict professional archaeological supervision and the results linked to a hot spot. Other schools in the project visited the excavation sites to see the digs in progress. Research for the hot spots featured in a display in the local library.
The website at www.huntingdon800.org.uk was launched in October 2005.
The project also aimed to create a heritage trail around Huntingdon as a permanent output, linking sites on the ground that are featured on the multimedia map. The target audience for the project is school pupils, local residents, families and life-long learners, both local and from a wider area. A public launch event was held in 2005 at Huntingdon library, with free ICT training available for all.
Currently work is proceeding on two publications, 'A History of the Commemoration Hall Huntingdon' by the U3A and 'A Town Trail of Educational Establishments in Huntingdon' by Huntingdonshire LHS.
