Landscape Study, South Cambridgeshire
Location: Cambridgeshire

The project's objectives were:
* to disseminate knowledge of local archaeology to a wide audience within South Cambridgeshire to promote awareness and active involvement in the community.
* to develop skills of members of Cambridge Archaeology Field Group (CAFG) in techniques of fieldwalking, recording and identifying artefacts, illustration and presentation by employing local experts from the County Archaeological Field unit and others.
* to train members in production of popular presentation material of topographical studies.

Part of the grant money was used to purchase a personal navigator using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The purchase of this equipment has allowed members of CAFG to develop their method of recording fieldwalking and this will greatly improve the speed and accuracy of producing publishable results. During the year a continuing programme of fieldwalking has been undertaken and the newly acquired skills have been used. The future programme will include a continuation of fieldwalking in the parishes of southwest Cambridgeshire and consolidation of the results, particularly in Wimpole parish on National Trust property, to develop educational material for public display.

Following a survey of volunteers' training needs, sessions were held on the following subjects: flint identification; basic surveying; artefact illustration; documentary research; pottery recognition analysis & identification; pottery recognition - Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon; building materials; writing reports - text & format; writing reports - site data.

A total of 33 people attended sessions on the subjects shown above and in all devoted approximately 382 hours of their time to improving their skills. The training sessions have increased the skills of members to enable them to provide results of a higher quality more comparable to those of professional archaeologists. During this year, in addition to fieldwalking, CAFG members have undertaken a small research excavation for the National Trust at their Wimpole Hall premises. One of the objectives of this work was to present to the public active archaeology and to discuss with them the methods and significance of the findings. Many hundreds of people were spoken to over the three weekends of the excavation and when members were present on the weekdays between.

The training sessions have contributed to the knowledge and confidence with which we can present material. Future work of this nature is proposed and we hope to develop educational material for use in villages locally.

We have been in touch with some other groups in south Cambridgeshire who have LHI grants for archaeology and history subjects. For the Fulbourn History group we have done training in fieldwalking techniques and artefact recognition.
