The Old River Nene has played a very important part in the history of March, which in the 16thC was a minor port. There were also many important buildings along the river banks, as well as in the rest of the town. The District Council is applying on behalf of the Market Town Regeneration Partnership, which includes representatives of many community groups and young people.
The project will involve local people themselves helping to improve the appearance of the riverbank environment and creating interpretation to explain key elements of the town's heritage.
Local young people will design and create, with professional support, murals on the river bridges of scenes from the town's heritage, including the river trade, railway history, etc. Other groups will create specially-designed landmarks with inscriptions relating to important buildings in the town and the role they played in the town's evolution.
The LHI-funded project will form a separate and identifiable scheme, but will fit in with the other efforts to improve March for both local people and tourists. It will help to link the river to the other important heritage assets in the town and promote them to both local people and visitors.
