Mill Common Community Archeological Dig. (Huntingdon 800)
Location: Cambridgeshire

The project involves a community-centred archaeological excavation on a site in the centre of Huntingdon, as part of the town’s celebration of it 800th anniversary as a chartered borough.

This will involve re-excavating part of an earthwork originally the subject of a dig by the Ministry of Works in the 1970’s for which the records have been lost. Fresh areas of the site will be dug to re-establish a context for the whole site. The level of the work will be kept with manageable limits in order to ensure that local volunteers can safely take a full part in it and local people can easily visit to observe progress.

The work will be supervised by a professional archaeology unit, but the group will co-ordinate and publicise it, seeking public support, interest and participation through displays and events. A full report will be produced on completion of the project.

The project includes contingency to cover unexpected finds and money to conserve and store properly all excavated material. Other activities will include a geophysical survey, background research and production of web pages and an Internet diary of the project. The site is owned by the Huntingdon Freeman’s Charity, who have given permission for the project to take place.
