Restoration of a School Garden
Location: Cambridgeshire
Turning the Red Lights Green, an educational charity working with disabled and disadvantaged people, wanted to engage the local community in restoring an acre of disused land at the back of Bottisham Village College.
When the College opened in 1937, the land behind the building had been used as gardens where the children grew their own vegetables, kept pigs, chickens and rabbits and tended fruit trees, and the produce was used for school dinners.
The project set out to research the way the gardens looked and were used, with contributions from staff, parents and local residents, and then to restore features to their original condition, as far as possible.
The group aimed to improve access to the site, to re-create an area where chickens could be kept, to replant fruit trees and a "landmark" row of Black Poplars, and in particular, to restore the rose garden which had been a well-known feature of the school grounds, enjoyed by the whole community.
