St. John The Baptist Church Perimeter Wall Restoration Project
Location: Cambridgeshire
Restoration of the boundary wall of the churchyard of St John the Baptist church, Wistow. As the wall is a grade II listed structure, this work was carried out by contractors. Nevertheless, the group had a series of satellite activities which involved local people finding out about and celebrating the history and wildlife of the church, church yard and wall, and the historic buildings in the rest of the village.
The village Women’s Institute created a time line relating events, buildings and people in the village to the wall and its history; the friendship group recorded memories of older residents and collected older photos to highlight more recent changes in the village; the toddlers group made a mural of the wall and churchyard for displaying in the church; an older children’s group recorded the wildlife (with the help of the Wildlife Trust) and a teenage group used video and digital photography to record the restoration project. All of these activities came together in an exhibition at the Church’s Heritage and Open Gardens day that took place in June ’05. The work required planning permission and listed building consent, which were granted with no problem. The group worked closely with the District Council, who also gave a substantial grant to this project.
