Could this veteran Oak tree on Vicarage Lane in Chigwell be one of the District's favourite trees? © John Price

50 favourite trees of the Epping Forest District
Location: Essex

The main aim of the project is to generate a wider community understanding of and involvement with tree protection by means of a project that focuses on special trees.

The funding will allow the District Council’s Countryside Team - Countrycare and the Council’s Tree Officers to organize an exciting and community-based project focused on the District’s tree heritage. The primary goal of the project will be to find, record and celebrate the 50 favourite trees of the Epping Forest District. Wider aims will be to increase general awareness and appreciation of our significant tree heritage. By involving as many people from the community as possible it is hoped we will improve and extend our current efforts to safeguard our important trees.

All the information will then be accessible via a dedicated web site designed and created especially for the project. A major exhibition will also be held at the District’s Museum in May 2007. Central to the project will be a web-based database. This will hold all the nominations we receive and will have a strong legacy for the future. The database will give us the capacity to store photographs and audiovisual material and future projects that will cover Veteran and Landmark Trees across the District will have an obvious home where we can store the information.

Local Community Involvement / Partnerships:
Our partners will be the general public, schools, local amenity groups including the Tree Wardens, residents groups, parish and town councils, The Epping Guardian and local business.
Members of the public will be asked to nominate their favourite tree giving reasons why they believe their tree is special. We are hoping for a big response from the pubic and from all the nominations the best 50 will be chosen to represent the favourite trees of the district. It is intended to choose at least one tree from each parish across the district. Each chosen tree will be professionally photographed and have all its notable features recorded to highlight its special qualities. For a selection an audiovisual record will also be made of the nominating person explaining why they think their tree matters.
