A Future for the Mount
Location: Essex

Rayleigh Mount is a Scheduled Ancient Monument at the centre of Rayleigh town. Many local people use it already, but few understand its history and significance. The group wish to undertake a full environmental, architectural, archaeological and conservation survey of the site.

They intend to commission Essex County Council, with whom they are working closely, to undertake this survey. Local people and schools will be actively involved in the survey work, for example, helping to clear scrub. These groups and other local stakeholders (adjacent landowners, community groups and amenity societies) will be asked for their views on how they value and perceive the site.

The draft conservation plan resulting from the survey will be the focus for a wider consultation process designed to find out what local people's views are about the Mount and how it should be used and developed in the future. This will be done through an exhibition and a public perceptions survey form distributed to local households.

The group will also create new interpretation for the site, using the results of the survey work, and will hold art workshops for local people and schools to help design new leaflets and interpretation boards.
