Last tile laid on the first half - 5 May
Location: Essex

On May 5th 2006, Volunteer helper Sara Green laid the last of an estimated 100,00 tiles on the first half of the Colchester Abbeyfields Roman Chariot Racing Mosaic - a momentous occasion!

On May 6th and 7th the mosaic was grouted - not as easy as grouting your kitchen tiles and a a few literally wobbly moments - would all the tiles stay in place? Happily everything was fine in the end and I'm glad to report that Sara Green is now available as an expert grouter!

After several months of hard work from around 1,000 schoolchildren and Open Day volunteers, the time had come to lay the last tile - what a relief. Everyone who has visited the project has been amazed at the size and quality of the work. Well done to all involved - we now need to do it all over again!!
