Progress as at 23 February 2006
Location: Essex
During February we have continued to make great strides with the construction of the roman chariot racing circus mosaic. We have also had a very busy month with visitors. Bernard Jenkin MP visited at the end of January and during February we have had visits from Bob Russell, MP for Colchester and also Cllr Kevin Bentley who is responsible for Leisure, Tourism and Business within the town. Staff from Colchester Museum Services also entered into the spirit of things by turning up dressed as roman centurions and Boudicca. Staff from Colchester Archeological Trust took time off from work to make as opposed to discover roman heritage.
Meanwhile, the children continue to make excellent progress on the chariot & horses and we are hoping to finish the first half of the mosaic by the Easter holidays, when we will all be taking a rest!
The public open days will be held after Easter and if you wish to reserve your space now then please email Peter Herring at redherring52@yahoo.co.uk
Many thanks also to the Colchester Peartree Business Centre branch of Tile Stone Gallery for their kind donation of the grout we need for the project.
Year 9 pupils at The Philip Morant School & College have also been busy making roman mosaics from cardboard tesserae - some pictures are attached below - the standard is excellent. In addition, Year 10 pupils are hard at work on their companion mosaics. These mosaics take their inspiration from the roman heritage of Colchester, the work of Anne Schwegmann-Fielding and must also include something about the student themselves. An example of some work in progress is attached - again the standard is superb.
