Progress at 19 June 2006 & Anne Schwegmann-Fielding's Roman Watering Can
Location: Essex

We have made absolutely amazing progress on the second half of the mosaic and after just 5 weeks work we have completed as much as we managed in 10 weeks on the first half. Practice makes perfect!!

We have been helped along by teaching staff from The Philip Morant School & College and also pupils from Lexden and Home Farm Primary Schools in Colchester. Thank you all for your valuable contribution.

As part of the project, our world famous local mosaic artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding held several workshops with Year 10 pupils from The Philip Morant School & College where she inspired them to make their own companion mosaics which you can see elsewhere on this web site.

One of the outputs from these workshops Anne has created a stunning roman watering can. The watering can was in the junk heap in the school playground and Anne has adorned it with Roman Horse's teeth, Oyster shells (a Colchester and Roman favourite food), roman coins, old crockery and various other tiles and buttons. The piece very much follows Anne's theme of taking a piece of 'rubbish' and adorning it through the medium of mosaic to make it something beautiful. She has certainly succeeded with this piece which is also left part unfinished to suggest that it has recently been dug out of the ground. If ever you needed inspiration for trying your hand at the mosaic art form then this watering can will help you on your way!

Very many thanks to Anne for inspiring the children to produce such marvellous work.
